The exhibition “Ode to Beauty” presents for the first time in Austria the photographs of the famous French Buddhist monk, writer and photographer Matthieu Ricard (born 1946). The exhibition focuses on his black and white photographic work from his books “Contemplation” and “Faces of Peace, Lands of Serenity”.

Matthieu Ricard uses photography as a source of hope, with the intention of restoring confidence in human nature and rekindling wonder at the wildness of the world. In the words of Henri Cartier-Bresson, “Matthieu’s spiritual life and his camera are one and the same, and from this arise these fleeting and eternal images.”

As a photographer, Matthieu Ricard has published numerous books including “108 sourires”, “Hymne à la beauté”, “Visages de paix, terres de sérénité”, “Un demi-siècle dans l’Himalaya”, “Contemplations” and “Émerveillement” His work has been exhibited at Aperture Gallery (New York, 1996), Asia Society (New York, 1998), Visa pour l’Image (Perpignan, 1999); Rubin Museum of Art (New York, 2006), Forum des Halles (Paris), Festival de Riedisheim (2010), Hong Kong (University and Convention and Exhibition Center, 2006), Toulouse (Musée Paul Dupuy, 2016), Geneva (Foire du Livre, 2016), Monaco (Affaires Culturelles de la Principauté, 2018), Sentiers de la Photo (Vosges, 2018), Festival de la Gacilly (2018), Rencontres d’Arles (2018), La Hune (Paris, 2019), Festival international de la photo animalière et de nature de Montier-en-Der (2011 guest of honor, 2013, 2016, 2019), and Good Planet Foundation (Paris, Oct. 2019 to Sept. 2020).
